What is hydrocortisone; neomycin; polymyxin B ear solution or suspension?
HYDROCORTISONE; NEOMYCIN; and POLYMYXIN B (AK-Spore HC®, Cortisporin®, Pediotic®, and others) is used to treat ear infections. Neomycin and polymyxin B are antibiotics that kill certain bacteria or stop their growth. Hydrocortisone reduces the inflammation caused by the infection. Generic hydrocortisone; neomycin; polymyxin B ear solution or suspension is available.
What should my health care professional know before I use hydrocortisone; neomycin; polymyxin B ear solution or suspension?
They need to know if you have any of these conditions:

any other active infections
-
chronic ear infections (otitis media) or fluid in the ear

an unusual or allergic reaction to hydrocortisone, neomycin, polymyxin B, sulfites, other medicines, foods, dyes, or preservatives
-
pregnant or trying to get pregnant
-
breast-feeding
How should I use this medicine?
Hydrocortisone; neomycin; polymyxin B ear solution or suspension is only for use in the ears. Wash your hands with soap and water. Clean your ear of any fluid that can be easily removed. Do not insert any object or swab into the ear canal. Gently warm the ear suspension bottle by holding it in the hand for 1—2 minutes. After cleaning your ear, lie down on your side with the infected ear up. If you are using the suspension, shake the bottle immediately before using. Try not to touch the tip of the dropper to your ear, fingertips, or other surface. Gently put the prescribed number of drops in the ear canal. Stay in this position for a few minutes to help the drops soak into the ear. Repeat the steps for the other ear if both ears are infected. Do not use your medicine more often than directed. Finish the full course of medicine prescribed by your prescriber or health care professional even if you think your condition is better.
Contact your pediatrician or health care professional regarding the use of this medicine in children. Special care may be needed.
What if I miss a dose?
If you miss a dose, use it as soon as you can. If it is almost time for your next dose, use only that dose. Do not use double or extra doses.
What drug(s) may interact with hydrocortisone; neomycin; polymyxin B ear solution or suspension?
Do not use other ear products without consulting your prescriber or health care professional.
Tell your prescriber, pharmacist, or other health care professional about all other medications you are taking, including non-prescription medicines, nutritional supplements, or herbal products; if you are a frequent user of caffeine or alcohol; if you smoke; or if you use illegal drugs. These may affect the way your medicine works. Check with your health care professional before stopping or starting any of your medicines.
What should I watch for while taking hydrocortisone; neomycin; polymyxin B ear solution or suspension?
If rash or allergic reaction occurs, stop the product immediately and contact your physician.
Tell your prescriber or health care professional if your ear infection does not get better in a few days. Do not use longer than 10 days unless instructed by your prescriber.
It is important that you keep the infected ear(s) clean and dry. When bathing, try not to get the infected ear(s) wet. Do not go swimming unless your prescriber or health care professional has told you otherwise.
To prevent the spread of infection, do not share ear products, or share towels and washcloths with anyone else. Throw away any unused ear suspension when you are done with your full course of treatment.

an unusual or allergic reaction to hydrocortisone, neomycin, polymyxin B, corticosteroids, other medicines, foods, dyes, or preservatives

pregnant or trying to get pregnant

breast-feeding
How should I use this medicine?
This eye suspension is only for use in the eye. Follow the directions on the prescription label. Wash hands before and after use. Shake suspension well before using. Tilt your head back slightly and pull your lower eyelid down with your index finger to form a pouch. Try not to touch the tip of the dropper to your eye, fingertips, or other surface. Squeeze the prescribed number of drops into the pouch. Close the eye gently to spread the drops. Do not use your medicine more often than directed. Finish the full course of medicine prescribed by your prescriber or health care professional even if think your condition is better. Do not stop using except on your prescriber's advice.
Contact your pediatrician or health care professional regarding the use of this medicine in children. Special care may be needed.

What should I watch for while taking hydrocortisone; neomycin; polymyxin B eye suspension?
Check with your prescriber or health care professional if your condition has not improved after 2 days, or if it gets worse. Do not use longer than 10 days unless instructed by your prescriber.
Tell your prescriber or health care professional if you are exposed to anyone with measles or chickenpox, or if you develop sores or blisters that do not heal properly.
If you are a contact lens wearer, ask your prescriber or health care professional before you use the product when you can use your lenses again.
A burning or stinging reaction that does not go away may mean you are allergic to this product. Stop using and call your prescriber or health care professional.
This eye suspension can make certain eye conditions worse. Only use it for conditions for which your prescriber or health care professional has prescribed.
To prevent the spread of infection, do not share eye products, towels, and washcloths with anyone else. Throw away any unused eye suspension once your treatment is complete.

If this product is used for long periods of time other serious side effects may develop. Report any other unusual effects to your prescriber or health care professional as soon as you can.

any other infection including active cold sores or shingles

skin wasting or thinning

an unusual or allergic reaction to hydrocortisone, neomycin, polymyxin B, corticosteroids, other medicines, foods, dyes, or preservatives

pregnant or trying to get pregnant

breast-feeding
How should I use this medicine?
This topical cream is for external use only. Do not take by mouth. Follow the directions on the prescription label. Apply a thin film of cream to the affected area. Do not cover with a bandage or dressing unless your prescriber or health care professional tells you to. Avoid appling to eyes. Wash your hands before and after use. Do not use your medicine more often than directed.
Contact your pediatrician or health care professional regarding the use of this medicine in children. Special care may be needed.
What if I miss a dose?
If you miss a dose, use it as soon as you can. If it is almost time for your next dose, use only that dose. Do not use double or extra doses.
What drug(s) may interact with hydrocortisone; neomycin; polymyxin B topical cream?
There are no known interactions between this topical cream and other drugs.
Tell your prescriber or health care professional about other skin products you are using. Do not use this topical cream at the same site as other skin preparations without advice.
What should I watch for while taking hydrocortisone; neomycin; polymyxin B topical cream?
Tell your prescriber or health care professional if your symptoms do not improve or if pain persists or increases. Do not use for more than 7 days. Do not use on healthy skin or large areas of skin. Tell your prescriber or health care professional if you are exposed to anyone with measles or chickenpox, or if you develop sores or blisters that do not heal properly.
Do not use an airtight bandage to cover the affected area unless your prescriber or health care professional tells you to. If you are to cover the area, follow the prescriber's instructions carefully. Covering the area where the topical cream is applied can increase the risk of side effects.
Do not get Cortisporin® topical cream in your eyes. If you do, rinse out with plenty of cool tap water.
