Finding information on herbs
The key to safely using an herbal product is to learn about it. These resources can get you started.
If you're going to use an herbal product, you want to make sure it's safe. You may need to watch out for some herbs if you have a serious disease, are already taking prescription medications or are pregnant.
Your doctor, a naturopath, a holistic physician or an herbalist may be able to provide information on herbs. You can also do some research on your own. These resources are good places to start:
- Office of Dietary Supplements, 301.435.2920, the National Institutes of Health's office for research and education on herbal and other supplements.
- National Center for Complementary and Integrative Health, 888.644.6226, the government's research arm on alternative and complementary medicine.
Before you put any newfound information into practice, talk to your doctor. He or she can advise you on the safety of herbs and whether they will interact with any medications you are taking.
